Study
Short courses and guided pathways through the Western Esoteric Tradition
Study is the learning area of Sub Umbra: a place for short courses, guided introductions, and structured pathways through the Western Esoteric Tradition. It is designed for readers who want more than scattered fragments, but who are not yet ready to disappear into a thicket of footnotes, diagrams, and nineteenth-century quarrels.
Study begins with Seven Steps into the Hidden Tradition, a sequence of short introductory studies that provide a clear path into the ideas, symbols, texts, and practices that shape the wider Sub Umbra project.
The first study is open to all readers. The remaining six steps are available to Sub Umbra subscribers, forming a complete guided pathway through the major ideas, symbols, and practices of the tradition.
Seven Steps into the Hidden Tradition
Seven Steps into the Hidden Tradition is a guided introductory pathway through the Western Esoteric Tradition. Each step is short, self-contained, and designed to be completed in a single sitting.
Together, the seven studies provide a foundation for exploring the wider map, essays, source texts, figures, and traditions gathered within Sub Umbra.
The purpose is not to turn the reader into an instant expert, a species already too common online. It is to provide orientation: enough structure to recognise the major themes, follow the principal currents, and begin reading the tradition with greater confidence.

How the Studies Work
Each study combines a concise written introduction with supporting visual or source-based material. Every study also includes a short assessment or test, designed to help readers consolidate the key ideas before moving forward.
The studies are designed to be approachable, but not superficial. They are introductions, not shortcuts. Their task is to prepare the reader to move through more complex material with a stronger sense of pattern, context, and direction.
Each study will generally ask you to:
- Read a concise introduction.
- View selected images, diagrams, or source material.
- Reflect on a key idea or symbolic pattern.
- Test your understanding through a short assessment.
- Continue into the map, essays, or related readings.
Subscription Access
Sub Umbra begins with open material, but its deeper guided pathways are reserved for subscribers. This allows the project to grow beyond isolated essays and into a structured learning environment, with short courses, source-based modules, guided readings, and future study pathways.
The first step remains freely available as an introduction to the approach. Subscribers can then continue through the full seven-step pathway and access future courseware as it is developed.
Future Pathways
Over time, Study will expand to include deeper guided readings, source-based modules, thematic pathways, figure studies, and tradition studies. These will build on the foundation established by the Seven Steps, giving readers more structured ways to move through the archive.
Future additions may include:
- Guided readings
- Source-based modules
- Thematic pathways
- Figure studies
- Tradition studies
- Downloadable study notes
For now, the Seven Steps serve as the formal entrance: a deliberate path into the larger Sub Umbra ecosystem.
